Larissa Theater Master Plan
Larissa, Greece
2023
The work presented here was completed during Andy Lantz’s tenure at RIOS where he led the practice as Global Creative Director & CEO. This project is a demonstration of that leadership either through the active participation in a paid commission with a client or the efforts associated with an invited or open competition.

The competition called for a comprehensive urban proposal to reveal the ancient amphitheatre and integrate it meaningfully into the contemporary city. The primary challenge was to create spatial clarity around the monument while addressing the tightly packed surrounding fabric and limited public space.
Key objectives included restoring the theatre’s visibility and civic role, establishing new public spaces and urban connections, strengthening relationships between nearby landmarks, and creating a vibrant mixed-use district capable of supporting cultural life, tourism, and everyday activity. The design also sought to reconnect the city to its natural landscape, particularly the Pinios River, through a cohesive network of public spaces and pedestrian infrastructure.
The proposal begins with the act of opening space around the ancient theatre, restoring its presence as the civic heart of the city. A generous urban plaza wraps the amphitheatre, creating a contemporary “theatre in the round” that supports public life while allowing the historic structure to breathe. From this central space, a network of public realms radiates outward, reorienting the city and strengthening connections between key landmarks including the Agios Achillios Cathedral and Central Square. Six new district buildings frame the amphitheatre precinct, establishing a year-round destination for culture, tourism, and daily urban life. A sequence of garden terraces descends from the cathedral toward the Pinios River, forming an inverted botanical amphitheatre that reconnects the city to its landscape. Cascading gardens, shaded seating areas, and tree-lined pathways create spaces for gathering and movement, while a new pedestrian bridge links Fortress Hill to the river park, completing a continuous open-space system.
Together, these interventions transform the district into a unified civic landscape—one that binds history, culture, and contemporary urban life while positioning the ancient theatre as the defining center of the city.
“History becomes the foundation for a new urban center where culture, landscape, and city life converge.”
The Municipality of Larissa, one of Greece’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, launched an international ideas competition to reimagine the urban fabric surrounding the Ancient Theatre A’ of Larissa—one of the region’s most significant archaeological and cultural landmarks. Recently rediscovered after centuries of being embedded within dense urban development, the theatre represents both a historic artifact and an opportunity to redefine the city’s contemporary identity.
The municipality sought a visionary urban strategy that would restore the theatre’s civic importance, strengthen cultural tourism, and reconnect the city’s historic, cultural, and ecological systems. The project reflects Larissa’s broader ambition to elevate its global cultural presence while improving the daily urban experience for residents.
